How to Choose Corrugated Boxes for Fruit Export: 6 Checks Before You Order

Published 2026-11-03 · P58Z Packaging

If you export fresh fruit, packaging failures are expensive: collapsed pallets at customs, mould from trapped heat, rejected shipments from soft corners. After years of producing corrugated fruit boxes for Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern buyers, here are the six checks every importer should make before placing an order.

1. Match the board to the route, not just the fruit

A box that works for 3-day domestic trucking can fail on a 25-day sea voyage. Ask your supplier which flute and board combination they recommend for your transit time and destination climate. For hot, humid routes — Gulf ports in summer, for example — we typically specify double-wall corrugated with higher ring-crush board, because strength drops as humidity climbs.

2. Ventilation is engineering, not decoration

Fruit keeps respiring after harvest. Poorly placed vents cause heat build-up and condensation; oversized vents weaken stacking strength. A professional supplier designs vent patterns per fruit type and pallet layout — mangoes, citrus, grapes and cherries all breathe differently.

3. Confirm the box is ISPM15-exempt

Corrugated paper packaging is naturally exempt from ISPM15 fumigation rules, because the standard only applies to raw wood packaging above 6 mm. This is a real advantage: no fumigation certificate, faster clearance, lower cost. Just make sure any wooden pallets you pair with the boxes are heat-treated and IPPC-stamped.

4. Check food-contact compliance

If boxes touch fruit directly — especially washed or waxed produce — the paper should be food-grade virgin pulp without fluorescent whiteners. Ask for the mill's test reports, not just a verbal assurance.

5. Test stacking strength with real pallets

Request a stacking test that simulates your actual pallet configuration: box dimensions, layers and warehouse dwell time at destination. Boxes are sometimes stored 8–10 layers high in warm warehouses; the bottom box must survive that, not just the lab number.

6. Verify your supplier can print, not just fold

Your fruit box is a moving billboard in supermarkets and wholesale markets. A supplier with in-house flexo and offset printing can put your brand, variety and origin on the box at low incremental cost — MOQ from 500 pcs at our factory.
