5 Fruit Packaging Trends in Southeast Asia & the Middle East for 2027

Published 2026-11-03 · P58Z Packaging

Fresh fruit trade between China, Southeast Asia and the Gulf is growing fast — and packaging is changing with it. Here are five trends we see from our factory floor, and what they mean for importers and growers.

1. Plastic bans are pushing traders to paper

Indonesia, the Philippines and several Gulf states are tightening single-use plastic rules. Traders who once packed produce in plastic crates are switching to corrugated fruit boxes — lighter for air freight, printable for retail, and exempt from ISPM15 fumigation. Expect demand for ventilated corrugated export cartons to keep climbing through 2027.

2. Branding is moving onto the box

Ten years ago, a fruit box was plain kraft with a stamp. Today, Middle Eastern supermarket chains and Southeast Asian e-commerce fruit sellers want full-colour branded packaging: orchard story, variety information, QR codes linking to traceability pages. The box now sells the second purchase, not just protects the first.

3. Premium gift formats for seasonal peaks

Durian in Malaysia and Singapore, dates and premium citrus in the Gulf, cherries and apples for Chinese New Year — seasonal gifting is a high-margin segment. Rigid boxes with handles, windows and dividers let traders capture gift buyers instead of wholesale-only volumes.

4. Climate-driven structural upgrades

Gulf summers routinely exceed 45 °C. Standard board grades lose strength in heat and humidity, so importers now specify double-wall construction, wax or coating options and corner reinforcement as default — not as upgrades. We recommend treating destination climate as a core spec, like box size.

5. Compliance documentation as a selling point

Saudi Arabia's SABER and Indonesia's SNI regimes have made paperwork a competitive factor. Factories that prepare compliance-ready documentation save importers weeks of customs friction. When comparing suppliers, ask one question: "What documents can you provide for my market?"

What this means for buyers

The gap is widening between commodity packaging suppliers and partners who understand fruit, freight and regulations. The second group is smaller — but they're the ones whose shipments clear customs and whose boxes build brands.
